Cabinet Of Curiosities – Magazine Draft

Magazine Analysis – Draft One

Our character we have created for our “Cabinet Of Curiosities” project has a largely intriguing past. One element of our characters past is his Professional Golfing Career. Unfortunately he had to give his career up at a fairly early age for a golfer. However I have taken this opportunity to create a range of medias that illustrate his career. This example is just a mock up. I created this layout for the magazine to give our group an idea of which direction we could take this project. This magazine front cover is just a draft, which I will present to our group when we meet, in which they can give me feedback about which elements of the layout I can change to make it look more realistic and professional. I created this purely to work out the layout of the front cover and the picture is just what I used as a template and is not meant to visually represent our character in any form. This is because we plan to produce better quality photographs, but to also photograph a different person, other than someone in our group (this is me in the photograph). I found this an interesting task to produce, as the aim was to represent to our audience that this character had a real professional career within the sport. I looked online for inspiration from existing golfing magazine, to gain an idea of how professional magazines present their front covers. I looked at the various aspects of the covers such as the mastheads, the direct mode of address and the straplines, in which I tried to incorporate in my own piece. I added certain objects such as barcodes to the magazine cover just to add a more realistic visual to the piece. Below are some of the magazines, which I took inspiration from, and you may notice some similarities between my magazine and the existing pieces. In future I will post more blogs posts on this showing my journey through this creation to show how changes were made when the piece was shown to the group and what It will look like when we have taken the more better quality photographs.

Cabinet Of Curiosities…

What mainly occupies my montage for my Cabinet of Curiosities are screen shots and photographs from British sitcoms. Although I have no comedic writing talent, therefore would never be able to write a script for my own sitcom, this doesn’t stop me from enjoying British sitcom products. Out of them all my favourite sitcom is Absolutely Fabulous. In my opinion Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders fit the characters roles perfectly and can portray the comedy in a very effective way. The sitcom is shot in a very classic British sitcom manner, being a very basic one story narrative for each episode. After finding out that the executive producer for the program will be coming to Coventry Conversations at the university, I am certainly going to be attending and will find this the most interesting out of them all. Absolutely Fabulous is just one of many British sitcoms that I enjoy, the list goes on to Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, My Family, Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie, the mighty boosh and many more. More recently I have enjoyed the sitcom “Miranda” which is a slightly different sitcom style than the others as the character address the camera and talks directly to the audience at certain parts throughout, it is a very modern take on old ideas. The American sitcom that i most enjoy is “Will and Grace”, I mainly like this programme due to the characters back stories and the sarcastic tone of the comedy. I also enjoy the animated sitcom “American Dad” for many of the same reasons as Will and Grace.

I am a very big fan of female artists when listening to music. I have two favourite artists which are Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse. I have enjoyed both of their music since they first became well known and are often inspired by their individuality and the controversial styles.

My favourite director which some of his films are featured on my montage is Tim Burton. I have always been a fan of Tim Burtons feature length pieces and shorts.  I have always been intrigued by his dark film style and it is obvious to a viewer of his work that he has taken a long time in organising and creating interesting cinematography to reflect the narrative and theme of the film. Although some people may disagree i believe that using many of the same actors in the majority of his pieces is an effective film style. It creates a sense of security with the audience as they know the actors will play the part in the film very well and almost creates Burton into a brand as everyone can associate the actors and style of film with the director which isn’t often done successfully.  My favourite Tim Burton piece is “Sweeny Todd”
